Job Title: Hospitalist (7/7)

(Physician/MD qualifications required) This facility started a hospitalist service in October of 2006. The program has grown significantly in recent years primarily due to primary care physicians stepping away from inpatient duties and focusing their efforts on outpatient care. We currently have 14 hospitalists with 2-3 regular locum physicians that provide coverage.

We are searching for three full-time physicians to join the team. Ideal candidates should be BE/BC in internal medicine or family medicine.

The Medical Director for the Hospitalist Service has been with the Medical Center for over 14 years with many of them in a Hospitalist capacity. We have 14 full time hospitalists, a few per diem hospitalists and four advanced practitioners on the team.

The full time physicians work 15, twelve-hour shifts per month.  Six physicians work the day shift (7am-7pm), one physician works the evening shift (12pm-12am) and one physician works the night shift (7pm-7am). The workload is shared equally among the physicians. The typical census ranges from 40-55 with the average number of encounters per physician being 15-17 per day (8-10 at night).  The scheduling is fairly flexible with the full time physicians working anywhere from 6-8 shifts in a row. On average the physicians are covering 2 nights per month. Codes from 7am to 5pm , are generally covered by the ICU attending, the hospitalist, or the attending of record. ER physicians also cover. During the night shift, the hospitalist on and an ER attending go to codes.

The full time physicians receive $126 per hour and are required to work 180 hours per month ($272,160 annually). Any shifts worked in excess of 15 per month will be paid at a rate of $131 per hour. The physicians receive $135 per hour for any night shifts that are worked. Physician salaries at hospital reflect median figures from MGMA along with input from our compensation consultants.

Each physician’s productivity is measured on a regular basis. If the productivity falls below the 90% or above the 110%, the physician’s base salary would be adjusted. There is also a $2,000 citizenship bonus and a $5,000 quality bonus available annually.

Hospital is a private, non-profit, NYS designation level II trauma center serving a tri-county area of 170,000 in northeastern New York.   It is a regional tertiary center that offers high technology and is JCAHO accredited.  It is one of eight state-designated Regional Resource Centers for Emergency Management. Of significance is that we are in the process of earning American College of Surgeons Verification as a Level III Trauma Center. It is recognized by Healthgrades as a Top 100 Hospital for Cardiac Care.

Our typical daily census is approximately 284 (approximately 170 acute      beds) with 165 physicians on the Medical Staff.  Our sub-specialty support is very good. In 2015 the hospital had 10,220 admissions, 96,360 patient days, 1,095 births, 51,100 emergency room visits and 22,265 surgical procedures.  We are one of the few New York hospitals that typically operate in the black.  We are much bigger than what you would expect in a rural area.

The services offered here are advanced and our technology vast. Our state of the art critical care unit has 14-beds, the Progressive Care Unit has 12 beds and our three cath labs have digital equipment. We have newly constructed OR’s (9), Emergency Department, main lobby and patient registration areas. The cardiovascular short-stay unit includes 9 rooms for post-procedure and cardiac access patients. Our Ambulatory Surgery Center has 4 OR’s and 4 endoscopy suites. Our newest Medical Arts Building houses a state of the art laboratory, pharmacy, outpatient cardiology services, and physician office space. Exciting news on the horizon is that the NYS Department of Health has approved our plan to establish the Northern New York Center of Cardiac Excellence. The centerpiece of the program will be our angioplasty and EP services which has gained much recognition for its quality outcomes and increased volumes.

The hospital has made good progress on the EMR front. We utilize Soarian Clinicals for Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) and MAK for Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA). We have electronic results for imaging and lab with the ability to view actual images linked through Soarian. We also feed much data to HIXNY, the regional health information data warehouse that can be accessed from the provider’s office, and in some cases we feed results directly into office EMRs. All inpatient units except Behavioral Health and the nursery are documenting nursing data in Sorian. Vital signs and I & O in the ICU and Progressive Care Unit are still on paper flow sheet. The ED is 100% paperless and we have plans to bring this system live to the other inpatient units in the medical center.

We offer a quality of life that is second to none along with practicing in a big hospital.  Hospital will cover moving expenses up to $10,000.

The Community

This area is a picturesque community of 38,000 located on Lake Champlain and at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. We live where others vacation. The cost of living has fallen to just below the national average.  The overall level is 99.7% of the national cost of living index. There are excellent schools both public and private.  The State University of New York also has a branch here with 6,200 students.  Montreal, Burlington, Vermont and Lake Placid are all within an hour’s drive.  Site Selection Magazine has chosen the town as a top city in the nation for business development for the past eight years.  In addition, a Florida-based economic consulting firm (Policom Corp) has ranked it as the top micropolitan in NY and the 27th in the nation. Have it all in a progressive medical center with a lifestyle you have been looking for.
