JOB SUMMARY:
The primary purpose of the HIM Coding Educator position is to manage the efficient and effective design, development and delivery of various coding training programs in order to successfully transition to ICD-10 and to train and assist entry level coders gain the skill set to code inpatient records.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for training current coding staff for ICD-10 by providing a broad range of ICD-10 training programs (Basic, Moderate, Advanced) to support the various levels of coding staff within the HIM Department as required.
Oversees | Reviews the work of the coding staff in training and provides feedback in a timely manner.
Reviews work of new hires to ensure coding accuracy and coding guidelines are followed.
Provides support to hospital staff with regard to ICD-10.
Identifies documentation improvement needs | DRG shifts and works with Physicians and CDI Specialists to improve clinical documentation and acts as a liaison to the medical staff and clinical documentation team for various projects and initiatives.
Provide project management|leadership for all coding training programs with a focus on the ICD-10 education.
Develop and maintain the Query library to assist in coding clarification for the Coding Staff.
Determine ICD-10 training Key Performance Indicators and create|analyze metrics to determine the impact of training Initiatives and ensure goals are met.
Manage all activities related to the training programs, including curriculum development, job aids, testing methodology, software and delivery, exam development|delivery, employee ICD-10 competency, certifications, and development needs. *
Facilitate project communications, including online exams, FAQs, registration information, etc.
Ensure that each employee has the necessary education to perform necessary job functions in compliance with ICD-10.
Provide ICD-10 education and training to coders, physicians, clinical documentation specialists, and other healthcare personnel.
Ability to code and maintain corporate quality standards and meet productivity standards as documented for each project.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Three (3) or more years of progressive coding experience in an acute care setting with experience in IP, OP diagnostic, recurring|series, clinic, emergency room, out-patient procedure and same day surgery. Advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, and Oulook functions preferred.
SPECIAL SKILLS:
CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) required. Certificate as an ICD-10 Trainer required. Advanced knowledge of: medical terminology. anatomy and physiology, disease process, and surgical procedures. Knowledge of accepted medical abbreviations and their meanings. Knowledge in the use of specialized references such as the ICD-9|10-CM|PCS and CPT-4 books, medical dictionaries and tex, and medical journals. Must have extensive knowledge of coding clinic, CPT Assistant, and all official coding guidelines. Advanced knowledge of hospital information systems, encoders and other technology to facilitate a successful virtual work environment while maintaining maximum communication and adhering to HIPPA security standards. Abides by the standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)and adheres to all official coding guidelines.
