Primary Responsibilities:

Manages and provides supervision to the release of information and report distribution staff of the Health Information Management Department. Responsible for managing information transfers to the Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE). Assists the Director of Health Information Management with all privacy related issues.


Certification as Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) through the American Health Information Management Association. Certification in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS), preferred.Knowledge and experience in information privacy laws, access, release of information, and release control technologies. Demonstrated organization and communication skills. At least one (1) year of supervisory experience, preferred. Must be able to prioritize and organize activities in a fast paced environment. Strong computer knowledge with experience in Microsoft Office. Successful completion of Reid Hospital's orientation and competency based skills appropriate for the job. Individual performance and competency based skills are maintained through ongoing assessment of competence and educational activities. Will receive written evaluations on an annual basis.

Additional Info:

Responsible for all release of information activities for the organization.
Works with all organization personnel involved with any aspect of release of confidential information, to ensure full coordination and cooperation under the organization’s policies and procedures and legal requirements. Directs staff in responding to court documents, i.e., subpoenas, court orders, etc. Works closely with Risk Management in identifying potential cases of liability through monitoring requests of information. Establishes processes to secure the medical record in potential cases of litigation. Keeps abreast of changes in the release of information regulations at both the state and federal level. Implements changes to policies and procedures as appropriate. Assists with all potential privacy breach investigations. Assists with the establishment of a process for receiving, documenting, tracking, investigating, and taking action on all complaints concerning the organization’s privacy policies and procedures. Works cooperatively with the Health Information Management Director in overseeing patient rights to inspect, amend, and restrict access to protected health information when appropriate. Works with the Health Information Management Director to ensure the organization has and maintains appropriate privacy and confidentiality consent, authorization forms, and information notices and materials reflecting current organization and legal practices and requirements. Acts as liaison with Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE). Works with outside transcription vendor to ensure quality and turnaround time standards are adhered to. Coordinates the daily import of transcribed documents from the outside transcription vendor. Has direct supervision of release of information and report distribution staff and assures they are adequate and well trained. Provides employee coaching, counseling and discipline in a fair and consistent manner.Completes annual performance evaluations of the release of information and report distribution staff. Monitors staff accuracy and productivity. Assists with policy and procedure development. Attends meetings as requested. Performs special assignments as required.
