Position Overview
We are currently seeking an Emergency Nurse Practitioner (NP) – VA Reviewer to join a non-profit organization supporting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This fully remote, independent contract position involves conducting objective clinical reviews, offering medical advisory opinions, and contributing to quality management efforts.
Requirements
~ Current, non-restricted NP license in a U.S. state or territory
~ Board-certified as an Emergency NP
~ Minimum 5 years of active clinical practice in emergency medicine
~ Minimum 2 years of recent experience in the emergency specialty
~ Actively working a minimum of 20 clinical hours per month in emergency care
~ Must maintain active hospital privileges
~ Experience in peer review or case review (preferred)
Benefits & Compensation
~ VA Per-Case Rates (subject to contract year changes):
~~ Audits (Facility Requested Reviews – FRRs): $95 per case
~~ Medical Advisory Opinions (MAOs): $225 per case
~ VA PIV Card:
~~ One-time flat rate of $150 upon obtaining the card
~ Note: Reviewer time for training is not compensated
~ All reviews are legally protected—no court testimony is required
Responsibilities
Facility Requested Reviews (FRRs):
~ Conduct standardized Quality Management Reviews
~ Answer focused clinical questions regarding standard of care and timeliness
~ Estimated time: ~1 hour per case
Management|Other Cases:
~ Evaluate cases triggered by performance indicators
~ Non-standardized review questions
~ Estimated time: ~1 hour per case
Medical Advisory Opinions (MAOs):
~ Answer clinical questions posed by attorneys, often from patient complaints or potential malpractice
~ Estimated time: 2–4 hours per case
All reviews are confidential and protected under VA guidelines. Reviewers provide detailed, objective, and non-biased clinical insight into patient care cases.
